The brooch shows clear similarities with bracelets worn by the Gaels around the same time in Ireland. Often the pins of these brooches were so long that, under Old Irish Law, there was a fine for accidentally injuring others with them. This brooch may well have been plundered during one of the many Viking raids upon Irish monasteries.
