Lavin rose to fame on Broadway in the 1960s and earned the first of her six Tony Award nominations in 1970 for her performance in "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." She won her first Tony Award in 1987 for best actress in a play for her role in "Broadway Bound," and she received her final Tony nomination in 2012 for "The Lyons." She also appeared on the hit sitcom "Barney Miller" before landing the title role on "Alice." The Maine native was still working on new projects right up until the end of her life
