Taken together, the direction of these coefficients aligns with the hypothesized chain linking tobacco dependence to chronic disease through reduced physical activity and worse mental health: higher dependence is associated with lower engagement in health-promoting behavior and elevated depressive symptoms, which in turn correspond to greater chronic disease risk (Figure 1)
