Ball and Arnaz frequently appear in the lengthy (by contemporary standards) commercials, happily smoking and touting the cigarettes, sometimes in character as Lucy and Ricky occasionally joined by Fred and Ethel or in their animated personas, who were apparently aimed at kids in the audience
This tax is imposed to raise revenue and discourage smoking by significantly increasing the retail price
The demand quickly grew as tobacco, referred to as "brown gold", revived the Virginia joint stock company from its failed gold expeditions
As for where these numbers come from: we called convenience stores and gas stations in the most highly populated areas of each state (obvious disclaimer: prices arent the same in every store in every area), and asked politely for the cost of a pack of Marlboro Red cigarettes
Not all duty-free shops have the same prices, just like no two stores have the same prices
There are no burns or breaks to the lighter but there are a few stress points on the plastic lid as shown in the photos
