本书是一部研究晚明佛教慈善活动及其对世俗权力影响的学术著作。全书分为三篇九章，另有“导言”和“结论”。其导言和第一篇，主要探讨了晚明社会结构形态、佛教与明代理学之关系，以及其时居士佛教之特点；第二篇从宗亲关系、社会性、宗教性和文化性诸角度，着力研究慈善捐助的机制和动机；第三篇分别考察了地理位置和经济状况迥异的三个县的寺院经济和慈善捐赠的情况；结论部分分析得出了晚明不同于宋、清的世俗权力与佛教之关系。书中附有地图和图片九幅。
