本書為章詒和先生親筆簽名，北美唯一獨家限量銷售。作者說：慶幸自己出身在一個推崇中國傳統文化的家庭。父母收藏線裝書，欣賞老字畫，有空還帶我逛舊書攤，家裏往來的朋友大多是像葉恭綽、張伯駒、柳亞子這樣的老夫子。記得是在上個世紀五十年代，我在讀小學。一天下午，我把語文課本放在書桌上準備複習，父親走了進來，順手拿起翻看。當看到第一篇課文是魏巍寫的《誰是最可愛的人》，大吃一驚！道：「這種東西能作你們的語文讀本？」說罷，從書櫃中抽出一本《古文觀止》，說：「你回家裏，就讀它。」接着，用紅筆勾了包括《報任安書》、《陳情表》、《赤壁賦》在內的十七篇文章，並說：「你從現在開始給我背！」我說：「這是古文，好多地方看不懂。」父親說：「看不懂也不要緊，先背下來，我再給你講。」於是乎，我的私塾從這裏開始了。站在一旁的母親非常高典地說：「你熟讀古文，以後寫文章就自有章法。」後來，她又教我寫毛筆字，從篆隸開始。每天一篇。一九五七年，父母同時成了右派。以往客人不斷、熱熱鬧鬧的情景消失了。每天從早到晚都是冷冷清清的。於是，全家正好讀書寫字，也只有寫字讀書。接着是「文革」，無數次抄家，筆墨紙硯都沒了，只剩下地板、天花板沒抄走。幾十年過去。現在不少人說我的字不錯，文章也還可以。他們哪裏知道，這都是用屈辱換來的。如今，日子好了，我也老了。什麼都可以放下，唯獨沒有放下筆。
